Consequences Of Paying Your Traffic Ticket

OKLAHOMA TRAFFIC TICKET DEFENSE

When ticketed for a traffic violation, many just write off the citation as a minor offense and pay the ticket. When you just pay the ticket, you have just pled guilty to the offense and are convicted of the violation. Consequently, you risk the possibility of increased insurance rates, adding points to your driving record, and other negative consequences. However, instead of just pleading guilty, you have the option to fight your ticket.

In Oklahoma, point values range from one (1) to four (4) based on the severity of the offense. If one accumulates ten (10) or more points within five (5) years, his license will be suspended. Two (2) points are deducted for each twelve (12) month period in which there are no convictions of any traffic violations (violations which carry points that is). Additionally, two (2) points are deducted for successful completion of a DPS-approved Driver Compliance or Defensive Driving Course. Reductions for completion of these courses can be given once every two (2) years.

Below is a list of traffic violations and the corresponding point assessments:

Careless driving: 2 points;

Failure to stop or remain stopped for a school bus loading or unloading: 4 points;

Failure to obey stop sign or traffic light: 2 points;

Failure to yield right of way: 2 points;

Following too close or improperly: 2 points;

Left of center or wrong way on one way: 2 points;

Operating a defective vehicle: 1 point;

Reckless driving: 4 points;

Speed: 2 points;

Speed in excess of 25 mph above posted limit: 3 points;

Violation of license restriction: 2 points;

All other violations (excluding the violations requiring suspension or revocation action): 1 point.
